The City of Homes, and the cars parked outside
El Cerrito has long been called a City of Homes, and the houses run from San Pablo Avenue up toward the Hillside Natural Area, the largest piece of city-owned open space. Two BART stations, El Cerrito Plaza and El Cerrito del Norte, mean plenty of cars parked all day. Older houses here often have older locks, and that is where a lock change or a rekey really pays off.
The town was first called Rust, after Wilhelm F. Rust, a blacksmith who also ran a hardware store where the first post office opened in 1909. Residents did not care for the name and changed it to El Cerrito, Spanish for little hill, after what is now Albany Hill. We like that a blacksmith and hardware man gave this place its first name.

Straight talk about price
On the phone you tell us what happened, and we give you a ballpark based on that. When the technician arrives, the first thing he does is look at the lock and make sure it matches what you described. A door that sounded simple can turn out to be a different story, and sometimes it is the other way around.
Then you hear the final number, before a single tool touches the lock. You decide, and only then we start. No surprises on the bill, and the receipt carries our license number, LCO 8138.
A name with a reason behind it

Asked by neighbors
I locked my keys in the trunk at the El Cerrito Plaza BART lot. Can you help?
Yes. Tell us where the car is parked and what kind of car it is. We come to the lot, check the car and give you the final price before we start. Entry is non-destructive first. If the key is lost rather than locked inside, we can cut and program a new one at the car with proof of ownership.
Do you work on older El Cerrito homes with original locks?
Yes. Older doors sometimes need a bit more care: worn cylinders, sticky deadbolts, keys nobody can account for. The technician checks the lock, explains whether a rekey or a lock change makes more sense and gives you the price before any tool touches it. You choose, and you get an itemized receipt.
Do you offer a veterans discount?
Yes, Patriot Lock And Key offers a military and veteran discount. Mention it when you call and again when the technician arrives. Everything else works like any job: a ballpark on the phone, the final price on site before work starts, and an itemized receipt with license LCO 8138.
